What wireless microphone setups work with SlingStudio?

You can use a number of microphone types with SlingStudio.

There are many options for using microphones with SlingStudio.

You could use:

  • A microphone that is built in to a smartphone or a camera.
  • A microphone that is mounted to and connected to a camera; audio is then transmitted from the camera via HDMI. This camera can be connected to a SlingStudio hub using a SlingStudio CameraLink device, or an HDMI cable connected directly from the camera to a SlingStudio hub.
This example shows the most popular of microphones, the "shotgun" type:

  • A wireless lavalier microphone. This is a small microphone used for television, theatre, and public speaking applications that allows for hands-free operation. A lavalier microphone is most commonly used with small clips for attaching to collars, ties, or other clothing. The cord may be hidden by clothes, and then it can be run to a radio frequency transmitter that's kept in a pocket, clipped to a belt, or routed directly to the mixer or a recording device.

These microphones have both a transmitter and a receiver. The receiver has wired output that can be connected to an audio mixer (sound console). The audio mixer output can then be connected to the SlingStudio hub's audio line-in input.

Be aware that you cannot connect a microphone directly to the SlingStudio audio line-in port. This is because a microphone signal is what's referred to as a mic level signal. The SlingStudio hub's audio line-in port requires line level input.

Since mic level audio is not same as line level, there are two ways to convert from mic level audio to line level:

  • You can connect the microphone to the camera, and then connect the camera to the SlingStudio hub either via HDMI cable, or by using the SlingStudio CameraLink device.
  • You can connect the microphone to an audio mixer or mic preamp, and then connect the output of the mixer or mic preamp to the SlingStudio hub's line-in port.
